First Annual Jim Boyce Memorial Scholarship Awarded - 2009

TRASA is pleased to announce its first Jim Boyce Memorial Scholarship recipients.  The $1000 scholarship was evenly divided between to applicants that tied for first place among four total applicants.  Both are University of Texas students.

Emily Freeman is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Historic Preservation program at UT.  In her application she demonstrated the importance and challenge of achieving accessibility while preserving the historic integrity of buildings.

The other winner, Cory Dear is in her first year of the Architecture degree program at UT.  Cory believes that accessibility should be “aggressively approached and emphasized in every project.”

All applicants were excellent and the choice was not easy.  It was encouraging to see the awareness level of accessibility in today’s architecture students.  Thanks to all who have contributed to getting the scholarship to this point.  This scholarship honors a man, Jim Boyce, who was not only instrumental in the development of TRASA, but in the Architectural Barriers Program of Texas.  Texas truly is the “Lone Star” with the high level of access provided to persons with disabilities because of the unique programs offered here!  Be proud to be a Texan!
